Donyngs Dragons Heat Up The Camberley Ice Box

SL Match Report

10/10/2026

Vs Camberley

The Donyngs Dragons travelled to the “far away” lands of Camberley to play them in the “Ice Arena”!! The bowling was hot, but someone had forgotten to turn the heating on. It felt like the winter of 1966 and we were about to have an afternoon of curling and Flake 99’s!

However, the Donyngs team had one thing in mind, and that was to turn the tables on Camberley, after losing 4 – 14 last year, in the same fixture. The Dragons meant business, and the Ice Arena was about to warm up!

Rink 2 – David Hu (L), Ted R (2nd), Wayne T (3rd) & Paul Dix (Skip)                         Score 12 – 19

Rink 3 – John H (L), Graeme C (2nd), Bryan G (3rd) & Keith M (Skip) Score 21 – 15

Rink 4 – Alex G (L), Darren R (2nd), Steve W (3rd) & David H (Skip)               Score 35 – 4

                                                                                                                                                      Score 68 - 38

Donyngs won on two rinks, lost on one rink and won overall, 14 points to 4

Rink 2 – The dragons got off to a less than stelar start and struggled to find the weight or line in the first six ends. Donyngs won only two of the first six ends to trail by 3 shots to 10. Despite some experimentation with jack lengths, the dragons were unable to wrestle the momentum away from Camberley. Donyngs won three of the next six ends to trail by 8 shots to 15 after twelve ends. It felt like the Flake 99 was melting and the cone was getting a little soggy… Despite holding good shot counts on numerous ends, the dragons were stopped in their tracks by some very good draw bowling by the Camberley skip, who saved shots on a regular basis. Donyngs won three of the last six ends, to finish in second place by 12 shots to 19 after eighteen ends. Donyngs won eight of the eighteen ends played, with an average score of 1.5 shots per end won.

Rink 3 – This rink saw MVP Dragon Bryan back in the fray, and a debut for the Dragons from Graeme Cupit aka Santa Dragon. The first six ends were very tight and hard fought as the two rinks sparred and exchanged blows with each other. Donyngs were behind after six ends by 3 shots to 6, winning two of the first six ends. Then dragons then began to find their wings, winning four of the next six ends to take the lead by 15 shots to 11 after twelve ends. The last six ends saw some great bowling by all the rink to maintain their momentum, winning three of the last six ends to win by 21 shots to 15 after eighteen ends. Donyngs won nine of the eighteen ends with an average score of 2.3 shots per end won. They would be getting a Flake 99 when they get home!

Rink 4 (top rink) – Donyngs got off to the strongest start yet for a rink, winning the first six ends, to take a lead of 8 shots to nil. The signs were ominous for Camberley, and it seemed that the dragons were in no mood to negotiate on who was going to be getting the Flake 99’s, at the end of the game. Donyngs made a clean sweep of the next six ends to take an impressive lead of 22 shots to 0 after twelve ends. Showing no mercy or weakness, the dragons put Camberley out of their misery winning three of the last six ends to take the game by 35 shots to 4 after eighteen ends. Not only did they eat all the Flake 99’s, but they also stole the ice cream van!! Donyngs won 15 of the eighteen ends with an average score of 2.3 shots per end won. An excellent result.

Overall, Donyngs won 32 (59%) of the 54 ends played at an average of 2.1 shots per end won.

Donyngs had a slender lead after ten ends, leading by 32 shots to 26. In the next five ends Donyngs went into overdrive to lead Camberley by 55 shots to 34, after fifteen ends. The Dragons then outscored Camberley in the last three ends by 13 shots to 4 to take overall victory.

A great team effort everyone. Special thanks to the spectators who made the journey over the Downs to Camberley “Ice Arena”.  Those Donyngs hoodies really came in handy today!
